We’re proud to announce that we’ve been named We’re proud to announce that we’ve been named one of the 15 winners of the 2020 #TDReadyChallenge presented by TD Bank Group to help expand our innovative Indigenous Food Forest initiative in four Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

COVID-19 has made sustainable local food systems like food forests an immediate priority for Indigenous communities, who face significantly worse food insecurity because of the pandemic. Food forests will help to supplement fresh foods in the communities, provide local produce, a connection for the community, and help to re-establish food sovereignty.

We are grateful to have received this gift, and are proud to join with TD Bank Group, our partners in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and all of our engaged supporters to help Indigenous communities create innovative and sustainable solutions to food insecurity.

Bella was able to put her gardening skills to good use and help her Dad plant a garden, right in their own backyard. Now that she can grow her own food, she’s been preparing delicious traditional family recipes for her children, including salads, tortillas made from chard, carrot, turnip and onions, accompanied by khat’i potato and topped off with llajua, a Bolivian hot sauce.

Viviana sells some of her produce at the market to earn extra income, and hopes to expand her garden to sell more in the future. She’s also learned about urban agriculture and producing baked goods to sell. “I am happy to have my garden. I want to acquire even more knowledge about preparing healthy and nutritious meals.”

A handicrafts artisan by trade, Aisha was finding their household income to be dwindling as art and craft stores were closed. But Aisha's family had received the #BestGiftEver of a goat from another CFTC-supported household, which was a great source of income as Aisha sold one of her goats to support the family and provide them with food.
