The impact of inflation in Canada this past year w The impact of inflation in Canada this past year was more detrimental to Indigenous communities given lingering effects of supply chain disruptions and pre-existing inequalities in access to healthy, affordable food and household goods, income and employment. In Indigenous communities food prices are 2.5X higher, and many households need to resort to cheaper, less nutritious options to feed their children.

Indigenous communities drew upon their capacity, knowledge and traditions around food growing, harvesting and preparation to provide more food through gardens, food forests and food distribution activities. These traditional land-based activities strengthen food sovereignty, foster local food systems, and help community members connect and re-connect to their culture.

Building a food-secure future for children and fam Building a food-secure future for children and families depends on unleashing the power and potential of girls and women. When women have economic autonomy, they can prioritize their own wellbeing, provide food for their children, strengthen their communities, and boost their economies.

Through CFTC-supported programming, women around the world learn skills like agriculture and nutrition and gastronomy training so they can feed their children healthier foods, and learn skills like pastry making that boost their own economies.

Families can grow their own foods with climate-smart agricultural techniques and drought-resistant crops, which increases yields in difficult times. Gardens address both short-term and long-term solutions to food insecurity, and provide tasty nutritious foods to be used in a variety of ways.
