Give Chickens for Christmas
Matched Chickens until Dec 25*
Give chickens for Christmas for just $25 and we'll match your donation. Help two families in Africa change their lives today!
* Give chickens for Christmas & we'll match it up to a maximum of $50,000 thanks to a generous donor.
When you give chickens for Christmas the recipient receives three chickens (double during the match gift campaign) which doesn't take long to turn into a secure supply of eggs and a rich source of protein.
Hen house supplies, feed, and training to raise healthy, productive chickens are included as part of your chicken gift.
While gender equality training is an important part of our programs, many women in sub-saharan Africa are still prevented from owning land. Fortunately, chickens take up little space so when you give chickens for Christmas you're giving a mom financial independence and the chance to lift her family out of poverty.
For just $25 you’ll be buying three chickens (doubled during the match gift campaign) that produce about 1,000 eggs each year allowing families to sell or trade the surplus for other food products.
In a short space of time Medina (pictured) went from being a wife and grandmother to a widow and sole caretaker of her two young grandchildren. She could barely keep her grandsons fed or clothed.
Thanks to a donation of three chickens plus the training and ongoing support she receives, Medina's chickens have begun to lay eggs, which she sells at the local market to earn an income for her family.
This new income has been used to purchase food and clothing for the children, and to make small improvements to her house. It’s also meant that Medina has been able to keep her eldest grandson Alliy in school and she has been able to cover the costs of the supplies he needs.
Buy Christmas Chickens here. We'll source them there
The charity chickens you purchase will be sourced locally, i.e. as close to the recipient as possible. This approach provides an extra boost to local economies while keeping transport costs to a minimum.
Send a Christmas Card to a Special Somebody
When you give chickens for Christmas they come with a FREE Printed, PDF or eCard, perfect for sending to a special somebody. Card designs include Christmas (pictured), chicken-themed, birthday, teacher, wedding plus many more. You can also buy chickens without selecting a card.

Needs Identified by Local Communities
The communities we support have identified Chickens, like every other gift listed in our Best Gift Ever catalogue, as being vitally important to ensure children’s health and well-being. Canadian Feed The Children along with our local partners provide chickens, school supplies, water taps, fish farms, etc as part of our broader programming initiatives.
Beyond the Gifts
When you purchase a Best Gift Ever, funds go towards the range of development programs in the communities we support. The projects go beyond the simple provision of items; they also include training, project monitoring and evaluation, local expertise and support – everything needed to deliver effective, sustainable, high-impact and meaningful change in a community.
Chickens purchased locally
Rest assured that when you buy charity chickens they won’t be put in the cargo hold on Air Canada to be shipped from HERE to THERE. That’s not only cost prohibitive, inefficient and inhumane, but it also prevents local, sustainable economic development from happening. That’s the last thing we want to do.
When you buy charity chickens your purchase will be sourced and distributed through CFTC’s local partners in communities that are running agricultural income generation programs. That means chickens will be bought locally and delivered to communities in Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda.
Training and Support is Included
Small family farms and individual families receive the chickens we distribute. These chickens are part of agricultural training and livelihoods programs that offer broad-based support. The chickens are distributed through Self-Help Groups and Village Savings and Loans Associations – microfinance programs that teach women effective animal care and raising techniques as part of overall literacy and numeracy, business and marketing knowledge.
Community agricultural agents work with women and men to ensure that they have what they need to feed, house and sell their chickens. No one benefits if the recipient doesn’t know how to care for her chickens and earn an income from them.
